Revamping and repowering

We enhance existing installations, improving reliability, performance and generating capacity.

Revamping: refurbishment and performance recovery

Revamping is the refurbishment of an existing photovoltaic installation to recover performance and reliability. It is suitable when energy yield falls, faults recur, components deteriorate or spare parts become difficult to source. We begin by reviewing available records, historical production data and site conditions to distinguish ageing effects from configuration, shading or operational problems.

We analyse modules, inverters, strings, wiring, switchboards and protective devices, identifying the work needed and the parts that can be reused. The design may include replacing deteriorated modules or obsolete inverters, reconfiguring strings, renewing connections and protection, and upgrading monitoring. Selecting new components includes checking their electrical characteristics and compatibility with the existing installation.

We recalculate string voltages and currents, cable sizes and protection coordination for the sections affected by the changes. We also assess the impact on the connection point and any incentives, defining the documents and notifications needed for the work. We plan the design stages with continuity of operation and reduced downtime in mind.

The result is a refurbishment design with specified components, updated diagrams and guidance for construction and final checks. This enables clients to assess a targeted intervention to recover production, simplify maintenance and extend the installation’s life, based on its actual condition.

Repowering: increasing generating capacity

Repowering upgrades an existing photovoltaic installation to increase installed capacity and expected energy yield. It may be appropriate when consumption grows, new space becomes available or higher-power modules can make better use of the existing footprint. We analyse energy demand, yield and site constraints to define a technically feasible expansion.

We study module replacement or additions, the new string configuration and inverter capacity. We check whether circuits, switchboards and transformers can carry the increased currents or require upgrading. We also assess compatibility with existing structures, identifying issues that need checks by the relevant qualified professionals.

Module capacity, inverter capacity and permitted export capacity are different quantities: increasing the photovoltaic array requires checking its effects on the entire system. We review connection conditions, protection and interface systems, assessing any power regulation, changes to the connection point or battery integration.

We compare alternatives through energy yield and self-consumption estimates, distinguishing expected benefits from the upgrades required. We prepare the electrical design, documents comparing the existing and proposed installation, and support for the procedures included in the assignment. The aim is to give clients a practical basis for deciding how to upgrade the installation and which infrastructure to improve.
